How do you maintain the priority order on the board?

If you start a sprint and order the sprint backlog how then do you maintain the order as it moves through the 3 columns?

It appears that you can easily mix up  the order as you move between columns.

Further to this it also appears to move items to the top of the list in the next column if empty thus not preserving the exact order of the sprint backlog.

Yes, I understand that we should finish a story before picking up the next :)

Story4        Story 3                  Story 1

Story5        Story 2

If you are using Ranking the order is maintained. Now that does not mean that across columns they will “appear” ordered in that if the third item in the first column is moved to the second it will appear horizontally below the first two in the first column. It will be at the top of second column and the fourth item in the first column will be moved upward. In other words the board doesn’t support gaps within columns.
