I have set up appropriate email notifications when an issue is created but the link brings you to the board and not directly to the issue, nor does it highlight the specific issue. This isn't efficient when lots of issues are being created or the backlog already contains many issues.

What exactly have you set up in your "appropriate email notifications"? When people create issues in the Jira systems I look after, I get an email that links to the issue view, not the board.
