How do you create a new column in a board

Becky Goodford July 15, 2020

Instructions say to go to Board, then Board settings, however, there is no such option.

What project type are you using? Core or Software? The fact you don't see the Board Settings make me think you are using a Core type;

If it's Core you will need to edit the workflow, each status is mapped automatically to a column, so if you want a new column you need to create a new status.

If it's a JIRA Software, you will need to go under Board settings and manage from there;

It actually called "Classic business project" is that the same as Core?

Yes it is.

Would it be  possible for you to send detailed instructions on how to do the above  you suggest?, or would it be better to just change it to a Software project?

I am looking to add another column besides the To Do, In Progress, and Done...

The main diference from Core and Software are:

  • JIRA Core don't have Scrum features, it's mostly a Kanban with no backlog view.
  • JIRA Core only allow you to have one workflow to all issue types
  • Less reports

To edit your workflow you will need to do the following:

  1. Open your Project
  2. Choose Project Settings in your left sidebar

  3. Choose Workflows in the left

  4. Find the workflow for your issuetype and click Edit.

  5. Add a new status with need with all to all transition (more in https://support.atlassian.com/jira-core-cloud/docs/build-the-workflow-you-need/)
  6. Save or Discard the unsaved draft.

  7. Go back to your board and you should have a new column.

Workflows can be shared with multiple projects, you should check it before modifying it.

Keep in mind that if you rename a status it will be a global change and others projects will be impacted. If you want to use other status, I recommend you to create a new workflow instead of rename the status names.
