How do I show sub-tasks in story details pane on board which exlcudes sub-tasks from filter?

I have created a scrum board which excludes sub-tasks (I think they interfere with the high-level view of the sprint). But I do want to be able to drill down into tasks for a particular story when I want to get more details.

On one version of jira (on prem) I get "3 sub-tasks are being filtered out by the board's Saved Filter". On the cloud version I do see the sub-tasks in the same scenario.

Is there a setting to change this behavior? is it just a version difference?

Just to make sure that we are on the same page, can you please let us know if it's a next-gen or a classic project?
Also, can you send us a screenshot showing where sub-tasks should appear?
