In the List view of Jira, I am able to group by categories (Group > Category). How can the same thing be done for Timeline view?

Hello @Joshua Packwood

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Are you referring to the Timeline view for a Jira Work Management project? I am guessing you are because you mentioned the List view which applies only to JWM projects.

If you are in a JWM project be advised that the Timeline view does not support the Group function.

Hi @Trudy Claspill

Thanks for the quick response! Yes, I am referring to a JWM project. I have access to Jira Software and Plans/Advanced Roadmaps. Would Jira Software provide such functionality? Can Plans/Advanced Roadmaps be used to create this view? I tried but couldn't add "Category" as a field in the Plan, so I couldn't group by it.

Hello @Joshua Packwood

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

I tried creating an AR Plan based on a Business/Work Management project. While I was able to do that, Category is not a field that is available to add to the timeline view, even under the Add Custom Fields option.

If you opted to use a Software Project, you could add a custom field Select List that you could use as a substitute for the Category field. You can using the Add Custom Fields option of an AR Plan to add that custom field to your plan, and you can use that custom field in the Group By options in the View Settings.

However, with the Software Project you loose some of the other views that are built in to the Business/Work Management project. There is not a List view for Software projects. There is not the built-in Summary page for Software projects. The Calendar view is also not available. And Forms are not available for Software projects.
