When typing comments in a Jira post with quotes, it's automatically changing " (ASCII code 34) to “ (ASCII code 147).
I have disabled the "Use smart quotes and dashes" setting in macOS which is working fine elsewhere (plain quotes are not being substituted for fancy ones in other apps or web pages).
It must be Jira that is doing this, but it's very annoying. Please allow us to disable this feature.
Hi @Marc Fearby welcome to the community. Could you share with us what version of MacOS you are using as well as what browser you have tried this on? Have you tried multiple browsers like Safari, Chrome, Edge, and/or Firefox to help narrow down if it's a browser or OS issue?
I took a quick look on Atlassian's Jira Site and didn't see any specific issues. I did find this older post: Safari-Web-Browser-On-Mac-Error-in-the-JQL-Query . If you can still replicate it after looking at that, I would have your SysAdmin contact Atlassian Support with all the details.
As a Mac user myself, it should work. I don't like being forced into a particular browser.
Hope that helps.
I just checked Safari and it's doing the smart quote substitution. I also checked the Safari > Edit > Substitutions and Smart Quotes is not enabled (there is no tick beside that menu item).
If I go to Google and type " into the search, it stays as a plain quote, and is not upgraded to a fancy one (in either Safari or Chrome).
This is definitely behaviour built-into Jira by the looks of it, but there is no option to disable it. Maybe this behaviour was caused by the operating system a few years ago, but it looks like some unfortunate soul at Jira decided to bake it in for our perpetual aggravation.
I am using macOS Sequoia 15.5, and have tried on Safari 18.5 and Chrome 138.

Same issue in Edge on Windows 11. People have been complaining about this since 2020: How do I disable "smart quotes", i.e. automaticall...
