How do I change a Story Key Name

Keefa Hawkins September 18, 2024

I Used a Board as template from a previous project and I when i added issues to the board i see it retained the KEY name  from the original board as the issues name identifier. I want to change the KEY name so it reflects the correct name identifier. how do i do this?

Hello @Keefa Hawkins

For clarity, when you say "key" do you mean the first portion of the issue key that appears before the dash, as in the "ABC" value of the issue key ABC-123?

If so, when you copy a board you bringing into that copy the Filter used by the original board. Whatever projects that filter referenced, the new board will continue to reference. If you create new issues through the new board, they will be created in the project referenced by the filter.

If you need to board to reference a different project, you need to create a new filter that references that different project. Then set the board to use the new filter. Then when you create issues through that board, they will be created in the different project referenced by the new filter.

Yes, i mean the first portion of the issue key. OK, i think thats what i missed.  I need to create a new filter first? then the board? then the dashboard in that order?

Let us back up a few steps.

Issues are stored in Jira Projects. Agile Boards are a way to visualize and manipulate issues, but the issues are not "in" the board.

You said you made a copy of the board.

Copying an agile board does not create a project or make copies of the issues displayed in the board. It only makes a new board configured identically to the original board, including using the same filter to reference the same original issues.

What did you want to achieve by copying the board?

aaah, okay that helps.  i misunderstood the use of the board. i thought i needed a board to attach my stories to that will reside in the project.  what i need to do then is add the stories to the project and inside the project create the board to have the view i want. does that sound correct?  i need the board to reflect project manager names that i can quick filter and i want the stories to reflect the correct project key

If you want the key for the issues to be different than issues that currently exist, then you need a separate project for those issues. The key comes from the project.

When a new Software project is created part of the process is to ask if you want a Scrum board or a Kanban board. So you will get one or the other by default, which you can then configure with the Quick Filters that you want.

Boards automatically have a filter for the Assignee field. If the Project Managers are specified in the Assignee field of the issues, then you won't have to create Quick Filters for that. If the Project Manager for each issue is identified in a different field in the issues, then you will have to create a Quick Filter for each Project Manager.

OK, that is what i will do.  I have a need for multiple SINGLE projects that mostly share the same PMs that i will be assigning stories to.  I was trying to create NEW projects but keep the static filters for the PMs working the projects.  I didnt realize that i was inadvertently creating boards in the incorrect project which is why the key was incorrect.  Trudy you've been amazingly helpful.  thank you so much.

If you have one board where the Quick Filters are already configured the way you want, you can make a copy of that board and change it to use a filter that references a different project. You don't have to stick with the board created along with the project, recreating the filters each time.

Do you want to be able to show all the work from these various projects in one board? Or do you want to show only one project per board?

If you want a board that combines all the work of the various projects, you can do that also, in addition to having the boards that show the contents of only one project.

Create a filter that selects issues from all the projects of interest. Save that filter.

Create a Board based on the Saved Filter.
