How do I add a story to multiple closed sprints

canand July 25, 2022

The Sprint information from one of the long running stories disappeared when I accidentally moved it into backlog.
When I explicitly moved that story back to the new sprint, all the previous sprint informations were missing, which was VITAL to our organisation level project metrics.

Out sprints are of two weeks duration. The work for one of our stories spanned for more than 4 sprints. But during our sprint closure I accidental selected "Backlog" instead of upcoming sprint for moving the pending stories from the spring being closed.

Now the stories that got moved to backlog lost all the previous sprints information.

To continue in the pending stories, I moved them into the new sprint (by dragging in the UI interface, but this was already too late. Now the "Sprint" field is showing only one sprint (the new one) instead of all the old closed sprints where the work was going on.

Can someone let me know, how to add the old sprints to this story?
This is VERY URGENT.

Hi @canand and welcome to the Community!

If you take a look at the threads from this related question, you will see that this is not a straightforward operation. You may want to try to:

  • retrieve the sprint ID from the closed sprints and try bulk change to set the sprint values again;
  • or reopen closed sprints to be able to select them again. Reopening sprints may also lead to some unwanted actions.

To be perfectly honest: I think you should just not take the effort. In the end, the issues you want to add to closed sprints were never finished (you wouldn't have moved them into the backlog if they were), so they are essentially still to do. Trying to fix the situation of an old, past sprint is trying to fix a Jira report, but I do hope you are more concerned with building whatever it is you are building and planning the work ahead.

Mistakes happen, nothing to worry about (too much) 😉

Hope this helps!

Hi @Walter Buggenhout ,
I agree with you in case when we are interested in the completion of a story.
But as I highlighted earlier, we wanted to track all the sprints where the respective assignee has done some work in that story. In other words we want to know all the sprints where the work was done in that story.

The bulk edit operation for the story allows only one number (sprint id of a closed sprint) to be updated in the story. For single closed sprint it works fine.

Here the need is that. - I want to update the story with multiple closed sprints.
Just wanted to know if I can provide a list of comma separated sprint ids. The Bulk edit operation allows only one number (i.e. one sprint id).

Any ideas how can I set multiple closed sprint IDs to the same story. This is needed by our organisation to track work of the members in various sprints.

Thanks in advance.

Sprint reopening is not an option in our organisation due to restrictions.
