How can we track sub-tasks progress in Burndown chart or any other build in Jira report

Medhaa November 6, 2025

How can we track sub-tasks progress in Burndown chart or any other build in Jira report, like in Time Tracking Report- which shows the data for complete project. Management wants similar display in a report for current Sprint.

I have created and explored all the possible gadgets available in the Dashboards. Except options for incorporating external plug-ins/gadgets.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, @Medhaa

By default, Jira’s native reports like the Sprint Burndown Chart don’t track sub-tasks individually. Sub-tasks are always rolled up under their parent issues (stories or tasks), so the burndown only reflects progress based on those parent items.

If you want to include sub-tasks in your analysis, there are a few options:

Make sure the estimation field (like Story Points or Original Estimate) is applied to the parent issue, since that’s what Jira uses to calculate burndown progress.

If your goal is to visualize sub-task progress, you could use a dashboard gadget or an add-on (for example, Great Gadgets or Custom Charts for Jira) these tools give more flexibility for tracking at the sub-task level.

You can also customize your board or report filters to focus on the issue types that matter most to your tracking setup.

Hope this helps clarify how Jira handles sub-tasks in reports happy to share a few gadget recommendations if you’d like!

Hope this helps!
