How can we track sub-tasks progress in Burndown chart or any other build in Jira report, like in Time Tracking Report- which shows the data for complete project. Management wants similar display in a report for current Sprint.

I have created and explored all the possible gadgets available in the Dashboards. Except options for incorporating external plug-ins/gadgets.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Medhaa,

Jira’s native burndown chart does not track progress at the sub-task level; it only shows updates when the parent story is completed.

One option is to use a marketplace app that provides enhanced burndown reporting.

If you’re open to using a plugin, our Great Gadgets app offers full support for sprint burndown charts with sub-tasks, as well as additional useful reports such as team velocity, release burndown, and more.

Its Sprint Burndown Burnup Chart gadget will solve this problem for you.

Hi, @Medhaa

By default, Jira’s native reports like the Sprint Burndown Chart don’t track sub-tasks individually. Sub-tasks are always rolled up under their parent issues (stories or tasks), so the burndown only reflects progress based on those parent items.

If you want to include sub-tasks in your analysis, there are a few options:

Make sure the estimation field (like Story Points or Original Estimate) is applied to the parent issue, since that’s what Jira uses to calculate burndown progress.

If your goal is to visualize sub-task progress, you could use a dashboard gadget or an add-on (for example, Great Gadgets or Custom Charts for Jira) these tools give more flexibility for tracking at the sub-task level.

You can also customize your board or report filters to focus on the issue types that matter most to your tracking setup.

Hope this helps clarify how Jira handles sub-tasks in reports happy to share a few gadget recommendations if you’d like!

Hope this helps!

If you need more precise burndown behavior, consider exporting sub-task data or using marketplace add-ons that expose sub-task progress in charts. Finding the right configuration can take a bit of coordination — similar to organizing a big event like Morgan Wallen Minneapolis where every detail needs to line up.

Hi, @Medhaa 👋

I'm Mariia from SaaSJet, nice to meet you.

If you’re open to trying third-party apps for Jira, I’d recommend checking out No-Code Apps Creator for Jira by SaaSJet.

When I first started working with this app, one of the first things I wanted to solve was exactly what you mentioned — tracking sub-task progress. Then I created my own widget to track sub-task progress inside the parent. However, with No-Code Apps Creator, you can easily build a custom dashboard gadget that displays the sub-task progress for each issue, providing your team and management with the visibility that standard Jira reports don’t offer.

The great part is that No-Code Apps Creator is AI-powered — you just describe what you want (for example, “a gadget showing sub-task progress within the current sprint”) in the chat, and AI builds it for you automatically.

It’s a flexible way to extend Jira dashboards without needing to code or install heavy reporting tools. 🚀

Hi @Medhaa

If you are open to try out a mktplace solution for this need, I can suggest

Issue Hierarchy

The app allows you to view your issues in a hierarchical view along with %complete progress at each parent level and at sub task level as well. The app can be added to a dashboard as well. Give it a try.
