Following on from @Alexey Matveev's comments.
As an admin, you can use the Admin Helper tool. This allows you to check to check permissions for other users as well.
Hope this helps
I think it would be nice if I could see what permissions level I have for a particular project. No reason to hide that (that I can think of), and it would make it easier to figure out what's going on sometimes (without having to wait for your admin colleague to get back to you).

Jira should provide a new release that allow basic users (those without admin access to see their assigned permissions). To go even further when attempting to commit an action that is not permitted per the assigned role, a message should populate indicating the required conditions.

Try to do something that you are restricted from doing and you will receive a pop-up that will give you something like "You're not allowed to change these restrictions. It's either due to edit restrictions on the content, or permissions settings for this space." This is in Confluence by the way. You will also have a link to Inspect permissions. Enter in your name and you should get some answers
