How can epics/stories/subtasks in Software Projects show up in a Business Project?

Mansi Desai February 28, 2023

Hi! I'm testing out a new project type for my team and I created a custom Business project  that allows me to have calendar views, timelines, lists, etc.

I can use the Labels feature to have Epics/Stories/Subtasks I create in this project show up in other software projects. How can I set this Business Project up so epics/stories/subtasks from other software projects (like this one  for example) show up in my Business Project?

The easiest way to do so would be to have a label associated with this project but i don't know how to do that.

Thanks!

Hello @Mansi Desai

Welcome to the Atlassian community!

Let us clear up your terminology first.

Projects are containers for issues. An issue exists in one and only one project at a time.

Boards are ways to view and manipulate issues that are in projects. Boards can be created based on filters and/or multiple projects.

Company Managed Software types of projects can have multiple Boards associated with them, and you will see a pull down list for those boards in the left-side navigation pane for a Software project.

So, you could create a board based on a filter that pulls data from multiple projects (Software and Service and Work Management, if you wish), and associate that board to a Software project.

Work Management projects have one and only one pre-built board that is based on a non-editable filter that selects all the issues in the Work Management project. You can't modify the board filter for the pre-built board, so you can't make that pre-built board show issues from other Projects in addition to the Work Management project issues. You also can't associate more boards to a Work Management project, like you do for a Software project.

Consequently you cannot incorporate issues from Software projects into the Work Management project features of Timeline, List, and Calendar.

Hi @Mansi Desai,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

You cannot show Jira Software issues in a Work Management project, you can only do it the other way by showing Work Management issues in a Software project.

Bummer, but good to know. Thanks, Mikael.

Hi @Mansi Desai

just to add to the above: Since you can't get Jira Software (JSW) issues into Jira Work Management (JWM), but you can get JWM issues into JSW, another direction might be to bring the capabilities that you like in JWM projects into your JSW projects.

I'm saying that because a lot of these capabilities are available in a very similar form through apps from the Atlassian Marketplace. These apps typically work for all project types, including JSW projects.

As examples, if you're looking for a calendar view, you could check out Calendar for Jira. If you're looking for an interactive list/table view on your issues, you might like the app that my team is working on, JXL for Jira:

There's also a number of app for Forms, but I haven't tried them myself.

You may already know that you can trial any app for free for 1 month, and depending on the size of your size, it may be free forever. So if that's an option for you, perhaps try a few and see if they provide value to you and your team.

Best,

Hannes
