How can I crate sprints in the JIRA Plans?

Anuradha Muddana February 7, 2024

I can change the settings of the plan to group the issues by sprint. But I am unable to create the sprints in the plan? Can anyone provide the solution for this?

Hi @Anuradha Muddana

It's Mary from Planyway for Jira

In Jira, especially when working with Advanced Roadmaps (part of Jira Software Cloud's Premium and Enterprise plans), it's important to understand the distinction between planning and execution. Sprints are a core component of the execution phase, managed within individual Jira Software boards, whereas Advanced Roadmaps focus more on long-term planning across multiple teams and projects.

If you're unable to create sprints directly within an Advanced Roadmap, it's likely because sprints are managed at the board level in Jira Software, not the plan level. Here's how you can approach this:

  1. Navigate to the Board: Sprints are created and managed within a specific project's board. Ensure you have the necessary permissions to manage sprints in the project(s) your plan includes.

  2. Create Sprints in the Board: Go to your project's board, find the "Backlog" section, and there you should see an option to create a new sprint. If you don't see this option, check your permissions with your Jira administrator.

  3. Populate Sprints with Issues: Once the sprint is created, you can start adding issues to it directly from the backlog. Simply drag and drop issues into the sprint.

  4. Viewing Sprints in Advanced Roadmaps: After sprints are created and issues are assigned in the boards, you can view these sprints in your Advanced Roadmap. Ensure that your plan is configured to show sprints. You can adjust this in the plan settings, specifically in the "Group by" option where you can select "Sprints" as the grouping method.

  5. Synchronization: Make sure your plan is synchronized with your Jira projects to reflect the latest changes, including newly created sprints and issues assigned to them.

  6. Permissions: If you're still facing issues, it could be due to permission settings. You need to have the right permissions to create sprints in a board and to manage the plan in Advanced Roadmaps.

Hi Anuradha,

Sprints are supposed to be created by teams, working in their backlog, not by (micro) managers working from a plan.  You need to go to each team's backlog and work with them to create their sprints.
