How can I change the card layout on a team managed project?

I am trying to add one of the custom fields to the card layout in the "board view" of the project board but I am not able to, how do I work around this and get a specific field added?

It is possible only for Company managed projects.

You may try the workaround mentioned in the feature request 

If the main use-case is to get the fields on the board/backlog cards, we can create a board in a placeholder Company-managed project(CMP) or a personal location. If there are multiple Team-Managed projects(TMPs), then the placeholder CMP can be used to host multiple boards based on other TMPs as well.
