Hi, what are the best ways to track kanban metrics without any plugs-in?

M B February 15, 2023

I am currently tracking Cycle Time and Lead Time manually - I am in the process of changing the board my team uses, what are the best way to set the board up so I can effectively pull metrics? (Not just necessarily Kanban metrics)

Also is there a way to add WIP limits to some columns?

Thanks

Hi @Morayo Bamidele

Without purchasing any marketplace addons, your options are

  1. the built-in reports and dashboards,
  2. exporting issue data regularly and reporting in a spreadsheet,
  3. call the REST API (our push out data with listeners) and report in an external tool, or
  4. add custom fields and use automation rules to update them.

Measurement, and taking action, take work.  Thus I recommend considering what you want to monitor, and why, before building any additional measurement capabilities.

Kind regards,
Bill

Hi M B,

Jira by default provides multiple metric reports for both Scrum & Kanban board. You can refer here: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/generate-a-report/

For more detail about Control chart (Cycle time & lead time) on Kanban board you can refer this doc: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/view-and-understand-the-control-chart/

And of course you can set WIP limit on your board columns.

Once you create the board, Go to the Board Settings

Then Choose Columns

Select the desired Column Constraint option

Enter the Min and Max for each column as per your need.

Regards,
Barnali
