Grant permission by field and not by project

Can I give edit permission to a specific field? Or will it always be by design? It would be for a custom field.

Short answer: No — Jira Cloud does not support true field-level edit permissions out of the box.

However, you can approximate that behaviour using workflow tricks/transition screens/conditions. Atlassian’s docs even describe this workaround.
