Hello! I can see in several places that it says that you can connect Goals to Epic's, is the idea that you should only be able to connect them to Epic's or also other issue types? We have tested and it seems that it is possible to connect to all issue types. But before we continue, it would be good to know if the idea is that it should only be Epic's and then what is the reason why it should only be connected to Epic's?

And do you have any kind of roadmap for this?

Thanks in advance!

@Amanda Pettersson-Dahlin - hi Amanda!

My understanding is that Atlassian wants to encourage teams to align their work to overarching Goals. If a work item doesn't contribute to an agreed-upon Goal, why do it? (Yes, there are always exceptions.)

The flexibility in what work types one can link to a Goal is its strength, I think:

  • Linking Ideas (from Jira Product Discovery, for example) can align your product ideas with company Goals.
  • Of course, linking Epics to Goals can help you align your work. Depending on how much work you have to manage, and how your teams are organized, you may want to introduce an Initiative layer in-between Goals and Epics to help corral your Epics.

Agree on which work types you want to link to Goals, and provide the Goals field for those work types.

Agree on why you want to link these work types to Goals - striving for transparency? Want to help with reporting? How much do you want to link? Everything, or just high-level work items?

All of the above depends on your situation. Experiment - start small, and good luck!
