Currently, at work, we are using on-prem Jira version 7.6.10 and have a Gerrit plugin to display the details of the commits plus other details. It has been asked that we have the same access started for Gitlab, but from searching the community posts and other sources, it appears that people are integrating Jira into Gitlab, not the other way around.
Is it possible to update Jira issues with Gitlab details (branch name, commits) by linking the Gitlab project or branch? Can we use Jira out of the box for this or will an add-on be ideal?

You can definitely integrate your Gitlab with JIRA using DVCS account, as displayed in this video:

Basically, you will be able to display any branch under the issue links section of any JIRA issues.
