Getting Started with Jira - correlation between the different types

I am new to Jira but I need to start with Jira and reporting as well as dashboards for our projects.  I am trying to find out a list of how Projects/ Boards/ Issues correlate.  If I want to set up reporting and dashboards I would like to understand how they correlate so I don't set up a board, as an example, and then not be able to report from it or have information on a dashboard.  Please help me with this correlation or relationships between them.  Thanks!

A project is housing a collection of issues that are needed to completed in order to achieve a  specific goal. A board is just a tool within the project that allow you to manage those issues. The board lives within a project, but you could use the board to manage multiple projects (as long as you are using company managed projects). Have a look at this article to get a good overview.
