The time tracking field in the epic has been filled in. But when it comes to the plan view, the progress (hours) column doesn't show the time tracking status of the epic.

Despite the time tracking field of epic's sub-task/bug/story has been all filled in, this situation still happens.

What could be the reason behind this and how to solve the problem? Thank you very much in advance! Screenshot 2026-01-29 111822.png

Hey @Yujia Ou

Welcome to the Community!

The reason your Epic’s progress bar is empty is that Advanced Roadmaps (Plans) uses a bottom-up aggregation called Roll-ups. It ignores the time tracking values set on the Epic itself and instead sums the values of its child Stories and Tasks. If those child issues are unestimated or have no logged work, the Epic shows 0% progress.

Quick Fix:
Populate the Original Estimate or Remaining Estimate fields on the Stories linked to the Epic.

In your plan, go to View settings > Roll-up and check the Others box.

Click the Calculate button at the top of your plan to refresh the view.

If you need to know exactly how long an Epic has spent in the "In Progress" status (rather than just its overall completion percentage), Jira’s native tools are limited. For this level of detail, we recommend Timepiece - Time in Status for Jira.

It provides deep analytical insights that go beyond standard progress bars:

Status Duration Report: See a precise breakdown of how many days, hours, or minutes an Epic has spent in each workflow stage.

Working Calendars: Unlike native Jira, Timepiece excludes weekends and holidays from its calculations, giving you a 100% accurate look at actual working time.

Flexible JQL Filtering: Use a simple query like parentEpic = ABC-123 AND status = "In Progress" to isolate and report on specific work streams for your stakeholders.

Bottleneck Detection: Identify exactly where work is getting stuck using Lead Time, Cycle Time, and Average Time in Status gadgets.

Disclosure: I work for the team at OBSS that built Timepiece. I hope this helps.

Best,
Birkan

Hi Birkan,

Thank you very much for the instructions!

Despite the time tracking field of epic's sub-task/bug/story has been all filled-in, the time tracking bar of epic is still empty in the plan view.

May I ask what could be the reason behind this?

Thank you!

Best Regards,

Yujia

Hey Yujia,

That is a more complex situation. If your child issues are fully populated but the progress bar remains empty, the cause likely lies in specific project-level configurations or background settings that can be difficult to pinpoint without seeing the exact environment.

Best,
Birkan
