Email change request could not be processed. Already associated with another account

I was recently requested by a sysadmin on a contract role to change my email address. I didn't realise this was changing it for my entire jira cloud account, and not just the jira instance for my contract role. So now, for all my clients I am using the wrong email address. I tried to switch the email address back but get:

Your email change request could not be processed because original_email@address.com is already associated with another Atlassian account.

I've seen posts that say I must first close the account that is evidently still associated with original_email@address.com, but I'm concerned that there is still stuff associated with this somehow. If I delete it and switch my new_email@address.com account back to original_email@address.com, will all my jira history on all my cloud projects still be associated with the new account using original_email@address.com?
