Editing Hierarchy Levels?

Shane June 3, 2020

I'm trying to find out how to configure hierarchy levels as I'd like to create something that is on an equal level to an epic where I create this and when I need to add tasks they come out as tasks instead of using a story / task where the lower level is a sub-task as these cannot be separated via Sprints.

It doesn't seem like I can create a separate issue type that lives above the level of Story / Task but having this would be extremely helpful to not bloat my Epics List. I could also use something that lives above an Epic such as Initiative but I'm not sure that's possible.

I've found there is a document here, although I can't seem to follow the instructions as this part doesn't seem to exist on my page:

  1. In your plan, click more () > Configure > Issue sources.
  2. Select your new project as the issue source for your plan.
  3. In your plan, click Settings > Hierarchy configuration.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Hello @Shane

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Please, allow me to provide you with some concepts and details about the hierarchy levels of Jira so we can confirm we are in the same page here:

The documentation you mentioned is related to the Advanced Roadmaps application, which is an extra functionality provided in the Premium plan of Jira Software Application as described in the documentation below:

What is Advanced Roadmaps?

That being said, I noticed you are currently using the Standard plan of Jira Software application, so you must upgrade it to the Premium plan to access the functionality mentioned in that documentation.

Using the Standard Plan of Jira software, you can only use the three default hierarchies provided by Jira:

Epics > Standard issue types (Stories, Tasks, etc) > Sub-tasks

Let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the reply, Petter.

Just to confirm, that Advanced Roadmaps feature which is included in the Premium Plan lets you create additional hierarchy levels as needed, so I could technically have something share the exact same hierarchy as an Epic but call it something separate so it's a separate bucket?

Thanks,

Shane

Hello Shane,

Indeed, the Advanced roadmaps allow you to add multiple issue types to the same hierarchy (Including Epic Hierarchy).

Let us know if you have any other questions.

I started the Cloud Premium free trial, but am having trouble achieving what I want and have been looking over a couple different guides about this. Would it be possible to quickly chat with anyone for 15 minutes to walk through what I'm trying to solve?
