Duplicate Story work types in a new Company-managed project

I've recently returned to Jira after some time away and noticed a few changes.

The "Issues" settings now seem to be called Work items:

When I created a new Company-managed project a few days ago, I noticed that the Story work type was duplicated.

Both entries had exactly the same name, icon, description and edit page, so I assumed one was a duplicate and deleted the second one.

My questions are:

  1. Is it expected to have two Story work types in a fresh Jira Cloud instance, or is this a bug?
  2. I also noticed that the Story icon is now blue, just like Task. If I remember correctly, Story used to have a green icon. Is this part of the recent UI redesign?

Current icon:

Previous documentation still shows Story in green:

I didn't create any custom work types manually. I'm the site administrator, and this happened immediately after creating the project.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi @wammo studio

The change from Issues to Work items is expected and is part of Atlassian's ongoing terminology update.

Regarding the Story icon, Atlassian has been gradually rolling out a refreshed icon set across Jira Cloud. I checked, but it is green there, so it is also strange.

However, I'm not aware of it being expected for a newly created company-managed project to contain two identical Story work types. I also couldn't find an existing JAC issue describing this behavior.

Could you check and inform  whether the duplicate appeared under Jira settings -> Work items -> Work types, or only within that specific project?

Hi @Gor Greyan, thanks for your reply.

The duplicate appeared under Jira settings → Work items → Work types, not only in the project.

I compared both entries before deleting one. They had the same name ("Story"), the same description and the same icon. I also checked the names and didn't notice any trailing spaces or other visible differences.

This is a fresh Jira Cloud instance that I created a few days ago, so I was surprised to see two identical Story work types.

Hi @wammo studio

Thanks for confirming. That's certainly interesting.

I think the next step would be to raise a support ticket with Atlassian. They can verify whether this occurred during site provisioning or whether there was an unexpected inconsistency in the work type configuration.

If Support confirms it's a product issue, they'll usually link it to an existing JAC ticket or create a new one. I'd be interested to hear what they find.

I'll just change the icon manually. It's not a big issue, so I don't want to waste your time on it.

I was asking because I thought it might be part of Jira's recent changes.

Thanks for everything.

Hi @wammo studio

There can't be work item type with the same name.

It could be the old (existing) type had a trailing space.

Hi @Marc -Devoteam-, thanks for your reply.
Both entries looked identical in the UI (same name, description and icon), and this was on a brand new Jira Cloud instance.

Hi @wammo studio

As @Gor Greyan mentions, you could raise this with Atlassian.
