Does this filed actually do anything or it is as mentioned, just a reference and it does not link to intercom?

Hi @Alexandhros Printezis - Thank you reaching out to community. I have not used Intercom so I can't be sure 100% but I did some search and seems like it's just a reference field that is related to integration between Jira and Intercom. This field is typically used to track or reference information exchanged between Jira issues

Mapping Reference:

It acts as a unique identifier to link specific Intercom conversations or tickets with corresponding Jira issues.
Syncing Data:
When integrated, the Intercom Ref Field allows syncing data between the two platforms, ensuring updates or references are easily accessible.
Tracking Context:
It helps provide context to the development or support teams by directly referencing the original customer conversation or issue in Intercom.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Bharat
