We currently have paid up maintenance but are not really using a couple of the Atlassian products (i.e. Crucible) that we have a licence for. Because we aren't taking full advantage of the product, we are considering letting maintenance expire and will consider renewing maintenance in the future if we begin using the product again.

If we allow the annual maintenance expire and a year later, for example, decide to renew maintenance at that point, does Atlassian force you to back-pay for the lapsed period, or is the cost of a 12 month renewal start from the date of renewal forward only?

Both!  By which I mean it's a little complex.  I'll try to keep it simple though with the two basic statements.

  • Maintenance renewals are 50% of the initial cost.
  • Atlassian will back-charge you for months missed after your licence expired.

This puts us into one of two situations if you try to "renew" after licence expiry.  I have assumed you don't really want to let maintenance lapse again in the most simple case:

  • If you renew within a year of the end-date of your licence, you will be charged the 50% rate for all the months you've missed (plus another full year)
  • If you want to renew when you've gone past a year after expiry, it is cheaper to get a new licence at 100% cost.  After 1 year, the cost of "renewal + backdate" starts to exceed the cost of "get a new one".
