Are there any plans to add an option to disable emoji shortcuts in jira in a user's settings/preferences?

I'm an adult professional using jira in a work environment, I'm not a 14 year old sending WhatsApp messages to my girlfriend.

Very frustrating trying to type and then having to go back and fix emojis into text.

Hey Chris, welcome to the community!

I don't think emoji's are only for 14 year old's, but I like to keep them out of most things also.

From what I found researching this, there is not setting to disable them globally or for induvial users.

But I did find this: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-39164

That is an "Option to disable emoticons / emoji / smiley when typing colon in JIRA" and it is currently in progress, so maybe a solution will be coming soon.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for reply Jason.

Hopefully the work in progress isn't specifically limited to just emojis prompted by colon as the title suggests. as there are plenty of other keyboard shortcuts that populate emojis.

Thanks, only seems to work with some - e.g. those that appear when using a colon.

I often write a list of issues to other users so "A)" , "B)" , "C)", "D)", etc. and "B)" followed by spacebar ends up with a smiley face with sunglasses. Pure unprofessional nonsense.

Not sure why there's no native way to disable this from a user preference way.

Thanks for the script though, I'll use that to at least save some of the hassle of seeing emojis.

Just to add, I don’t think Jira could disable system-level emoji shortcuts - for example, Win + . on Windows or the equivalent emoji picker shortcut on macOS - as those are provided by the operating system and work across most text editors, not only Jira.

So, ultimately, the operating system’s emoji picker would most likely remain available anyway, and that’s only one alternative, as already pointed out.

Personally, I don’t think emojis are only for 14-year-olds either. They can sometimes help communicate tone, since the same plain text can be interpreted in several different ways, although emojis can, of course, also be interpreted differently. 🙂

That said, I do agree with you, Chris, when it comes to strings such as "B)" being automatically converted into emojis. In about 99% of cases, that’s not what I intended to type either.
