Deleted projects - how to retrieve

Miriam Nieto October 21, 2025

Hey, my project was deleted and I did not access the email when they communicated it. How can i retrieve it as it had key information about a new business. Also, is this even GDPR complaint? They remove projects as they wish… I must have right to access all this data!

The same happened in Confluence

Hi Miriam,
I'm sorry to hear about the issue you’ve encountered.

If your Jira project or Confluence space was deleted, the first step is to contact your site administrator or organization admin — only they have access to restore or review deleted projects or spaces.
Jira and Confluence don’t permanently delete data immediately; instead, items are usually kept in the trash for 60 days, where admins can restore them.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. For Jira:
    • Ask your site admin to check the Jira Trash (Jira Settings → Projects → Trash).
    • If the project still appears there, they can click Restore.
  2. For Confluence:
    • Similarly, admins can open Space Settings → Overview → Trash and restore deleted pages or spaces.

If you’re not an admin and the project has been permanently deleted, Atlassian Support may be able to assist if it’s a Cloud site (https://support.atlassian.com/contact).

Regarding your GDPR concern — yes, Atlassian Cloud is fully GDPR-compliant.
Data is only deleted according to organization policies or admin actions, and access rights remain managed by your site’s administrators.
If you believe data was deleted without proper authorization or notification, you can request a data access review through Atlassian support.

Hi @Miriam Nieto

Projects are first moved to the trash for a period of 60 days before they being permanently deleted. Did you check the trash?

Settings > Projects > Trash

If it is not there, you should search Backup/Recovery app that provides restore.

I found this one, you can check.

About the GDPR.

Yes, you can — but only under certain conditions.
You can raise a GDPR request (e.g., a Data Subject Access Request or complaint) if the deleted data included personal data about you or another identifiable individual.

That means:

  • Data created or authored by you (comments, documents, pages showing your name, email, or ID),

  • Data that contains personal identifiers (names, photos, voice, or opinions tied to identifiable persons),

So, if your deleted project or Confluence space contained personal information, GDPR applies.
If the deleted content was purely business or technical (non-personal) data, GDPR does not apply directly.

Also, you can reach out to Atlassian Support for clarification.

I am unable to see the trash. Whenever I found it in Jira or Confluence, it is empty. So this company will not help me fix the issue then?

Dear @Miriam Nieto

Are you an admin in your organization?

Miriam Nieto October 22, 2025

I believe I was made an admin. Either way, even the first person who created this is unable to retrieve any files.
