Customising Kanban board

I'm new to JIRA and Confluence and trying to figure out how I can best use the system. I'll hopefully be on cloud some point later this year but currently on server.

I work in a role across a number of project teams where I need to identify different tasks/issues and then push for some to take priority. I'm not directly involved in the work going on so all I'm able to do is add a label to the JIRA tickets of the things I'm interested in, and not interfere with the status or any other parts.

What I'm looking to do is get together all the tickets I've labelled and be able to sort them into groups for ones to ones to watch, ones to actively drive now and ones to come back to later. Is there a way to have tickets in a "swin-lane" format where I can move them around, independent to the information on the ticket?

So far the best I've got is having links to the tickets in a separate teams kanban board.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

Hello @Sarah Robinson

Welcome to the Atlassian community!

Is there a way to have tickets in a "swin-lane" format where I can move them around, independent to the information on the ticket?

No, this is not possible. Boards are just a way to view and manipulate issues that exist in Jira Projects. How the issues display on the board is based on the data in the issue.

Boards are use filters to select the issues to display. Because of this an issue can actually be displayed in multiple boards. A change to issue data will be reflected in all boards where that issue is displayed.

The vertical groups (columns) show issues based on the issue's current Status value (i.e. To Do, In Progress, Done). If you move an issue card from one column to another that will change the Status of the issue. Columns cannot be based on any other issue value except Status.

Horizontal groupings (swimlanes) are based on the information in the issue. There are a variety of ways you can set up swimlanes to group issues based on the issue information, however none of them allow you to "drag" issues from one swimlane to another.

Within a swimlane/column area you can drag and drop issues up and down to reorder them. However that changes the Rank of the issue (relative priority) and that will also be reflected in any other board where that issue is displayed.

If you are allowed to add labels to the issues, you could add labels that represent "watch" vs. "drive now" vs. "later". You could use those labels to create Swimlanes on your board that gives you a view of all issues that contain those labels. You would have to edit the issues and change the label to move the issue from one swimlane to another.

Hi, this is what I thought, but thanks for confirming.

I'll have a look into adding different labels to create swimlanes as this looks like the best option.

Thanks
