Custom issue type does not show up on KanBan board

Adrian user February 19, 2025

I have created a unique company wide issue type as JIRA admin

    - It is a collection of Epics called "Project Epics"

And associated it to a project

   - I can add this new issue type and add epics as sub-issues

   - This shows up correctly in the project

But when I look at the TimeLine or Kanban board this issue doesn't show up

   - All the sub-epics show up correctly

How do I add this new parent issue type to my Kanban boards?

Hello @Adrian user

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

As part of adding your "Project Epics" issue type, did you modify the Issue Type Hierarchy? Is that new issue type add to the hierarchy level above the Epic issue types?

Agile boards and the basic Timeline feature associated with them are not capable of showing the hierarchical relationship of issues beyond the default levels of Epic / child issues / subtasks. Issue types above Epics in the hierarchy will present visually in the same way that "child issues" do - as cards on the board and in the backlog issue list.

To see a visual representation of an extended issue type hierarchy you will need to create a Plan under the Plans menu. The Timeline feature in those plans is capable of showing the extending issue type hierarchy.

Thankyou for your quick response Trudy

I have now created a plan and can see all levels correctly in the plan timeline.

How do I make the plan timeline look like the project timeline?

I'm referring to the coloring of the timeline bars

Can you provide images of what you are seeing in each one?

If by "project timeline" you mean the basic Timeline feature available with an agile board, the bar colors there reflect the color assigned to the parent epic.

In the Plan timeline you select an attribute field on which to base the colors.

And then you specify the color to use for each value of that attribute.
