Custom field to show more information

We have a custom field called "Software Components" which are selected via checkboxes.  Using the old issue view,  Software Components field only shows 3 software components, while many more may have been selected.  If we click edit you can see the full number of components that have been selected. Is there a way to have the field display all Software components that have been selected or provide the number of additional components that are not being displayed?
