Creation of Plans Timeline with no Issue Source

Hi! I'm looking to create a plans timeline for my team but wanted to check if I could populate the issues with projects we were doing in the team (i.e. do not come from any issue source such as a board, project, etc.) I'm looking to create a timeline that allows me to breakdown the issues by manager, and highlighting it over a time period + showing status of the project.

Thanks so much.

Hi @Erika Goh and welcome to the Community!

A plan without an issue source would be like a pub without beer: it doesn't exist. Issues represent your scope, which essentially are the items you plan your target dates against.

The way to bring projects into the picture is to add one/more custom issue types to your Jira instance and add them to the Jira hierarchy above Epics. See this support article to learn more.

Let's assume you create a project (or initiative, or anything else you like to call it) and add it above Epics in the hierarchy, it is common practice to create a separate Jira project to contain just those project issues. By adding the project or the project board of that project as an issue source to the plan, you can start tracking them as you like. From that point onwards, you can also connect your epics to them and track work across the hierarchy.

Hope this helps!
