Creating new projects from a Project Template creates a copy of the screens

Michael Brändel October 30, 2025

We use custom project templates to align teams to use specific project configurations across the company.

When creating a new project from a custom template, all screens, the Screen Scheme and the Work Type Screen Scheme are copied (with a number in brackets as a postfix).

This is an unexpected behavior since we want all projects based on a template to use exactly the same configuration.

This happens only for screens! Workflow, Field and Work Type Schemes are the same as the template project.

Am I missing something or is this simply a bug?

Hi @Michael Brändel

Is the template a project within Jira and when you create a new project, use use the option with shared with existing project?

Or are you taking different steps?

Is this a template based on a company managed project?

I also see this is an Enterprise only feature, I have tried this on an Enterprise instance, but no duplication in screens or related screen schemes. This test was done on template based on a company managed project.

Can it me in the naming of you used screens and related screen schemes?

Otherwise it might be an instance issue, reach out to Atlassian Support in that case

Hello Marc,

Yes, I am only talking about company-managed projects in Jira cloud.

We created custom templates from our template projects. This only happens when creating a new project using the custom templates functionality.

Here is an example of how it looks when you create a new project from a custom template:

It does not happen when you create a new project and select the "Share settings with an existing project" option!

Hi @Michael Brändel , thanks for your post.

Please can you show an anonymised screen of the issue?

As you say / according to the documentation -https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/create-a-new-project/ , a space / project created with shared settings should have all of these schemes in common

Spaces that share configuration share:

  • work types

  • workflows

  • screens

  • fields

  • permissions

  • notifications

If the screens are separate, indeed, it sounds like something is wrong. If you compare two of the spaces / projects side by side, you are saying they share everything apart from the screen scheme? Did you create the project yourself or was this reported to you later? Is it possible someone changed the screen scheme after?

Best wishes
