Creating a Jira Issue Template with a Predefined Table

As Kate mentioned, it would help to know how your current template is configured, as the answer may depend on the app or workaround you are using. The workaround shared by Arkadiusz may work well for a single predefined table, although it requires some additional configuration and does not provide a selection of reusable templates.

For a more flexible setup, Easy Issue Templates for Jira lets you create reusable templates with predefined tables, instructions, and Jira field values. Full disclosure: I’m from the team behind the app.

When a user selects a template, the Description is pre-filled with the table ready to complete. This is especially useful when you need several different templates rather than one default layout for every issue.

What marketplace app do you use to create this template? I'm asking because in Jira natively you can't create templates for issues. If it's not the app, please share how you configured it.

You are right, Jira's native Description field does not easily support dynamic or structured tables that appear automatically upon issue creation. It can be a significant limitation when you want to enforce a consistent data input structure.

I am from Table Grid Next Generation team. Please note that our app does not insert a table directly into the Description field itself. Instead, it offers an alternative solution to address this need by letting you add a separate Table Grid custom field to your issue screens. While this is a near-fit rather than an exact match for a table inside the Description, it allows you to automatically display a structured, pre-filled table layout whenever a new issue is created.

The way this works is by setting up a Table Grid Custom Field where you define the specific columns you need, such as item numbers, names, or prices, and adding this field to your Jira issue screens.
To have it pre-populated, you can define default values for individual columns, or specify default rows entered in the data preview while configuring columns. When a user creates a new issue, the grid automatically renders as a ready-to-fill table with these predefined rows and columns.
