Create Board with Next Issue/Story Column or Hierachical View

Update: my sleuthing has uncovered that the backup solution I'm looking for is a filtered hierarchical or "tree" view

Hi all,

I'm trying to create a board that shows an Epic, and that Epic would have a column for the "Last Completed Story/Subtask" and another column for the "Next Story/Subtask." Alternatively, even a list of the high-level epic with a dropdown to each story (a la this timeline view that offers a drop down into Epics from the Project level) would be fine.

The goal is to basically generate a milestone view: what are we doing broadly, what's our current status, what did we last deliver, and what's the next deliverable we're working on and those timings? Because many stories can be done concurrently, I can understand a column for next story/task might not exist. At which point, even just showing all associated/dependent stories and their start and stop dates would be ideal.

Update: 

I was able to get close to my backup solution with "List," however whenever I apply a filter, I lose the dropdown functionality I am in need of. Is there any way around this? 

Alternative, is there any way to add a "Group By" for "Summary" or "Epic" and then stories would be the drop downs?
