Costum URL Kanban Board into MS Teams

Daniel Auer February 8, 2024

Hello,

We're collaborating with an external partner who has created a Kanban board on Jira, which is hosted on a custom URL (jira.companyname.com). Our access to this Jira instance is limited; we don't have Atlassian accounts but are instead whitelisted with our company emails for accessing the Kanban board. We're trying to integrate this Kanban board into Microsoft Teams. However, we've encountered issues because standard integration tools like 'Smart Connect' don't support custom URLs and require direct Atlassian account access. We're not interested in receiving notifications but want to display the Kanban board and its tasks within Teams, similar to what 'Smart Connect' offers. Is there a workaround or solution to achieve this integration?

Thanks and greetings

Hi @Daniel Auer and welcome to the Community,

The "Whitelisting".. If it is as you described, they would have opened their Jira to the public (any Non-Logged in User) and given access to the one Project/Board. You are definitely not logging in when accessing their Jira?

In Teams, you can just integrate a "Website". No extra App needed. It simply integrates the Webpage as Webview.

Hey @Rebekka Heilmann _viadee_ I need to log in with my company email to access a Jira Kanban board created by an external partner, which seems to grant me a form of guest access rather than full account privileges. This is because, although I use my company email for Jira, I cannot see the board under my own Jira account. We attempted to integrate this board into Microsoft Teams using a webview, but this approach requires frequent re-logins, which is impractical, especially since my project team members don't have direct access and would rely on me to log in on their behalf. Additionally, this method of integration has not been functioning smoothly within Teams. Is there an effective solution to integrate the Kanban board into Teams without these login and access issues?

Not really part of your question, but maybe helpful for you in the future: If you need to log in, then you do have an Atlassian Account with that Email Adress automatically. It doesn't matter what kind of access you have. When you log into your Company's Jira, you won't see any content of other Jira sites as the data is strictly separeted.

Have you checked out the Jira Cloud App by Atlassian? I don't think it can integrate the Board view currently, but you could show the Board's filter result (presumably something like " project = "xyz" ")

Integrate Jira Cloud with Microsoft Teams | Jira Software Cloud | Atlassian Support

Thank you for the suggestion and the clarification about the Atlassian account. We have considered the Jira Cloud App by Atlassian, but it seems it doesn't meet our needs fully. The app primarily posts updates as messages, but what we're looking for is a more integrated solution within Microsoft Teams. We want to display the tasks from the Jira Kanban board either directly within the Teams Planner or as a dedicated tab in Teams, rather than just receiving message updates. The goal is to have a seamless integration that allows for direct interaction with the tasks within the Teams environment.
