Hello,
we want to migrate our Jira/Confluence on premise to the cloud.
We have several departments, some are already using Jira/Confluence, others will start using it in the cloud.
As the migration will ost likely take some time, the question would be, if those departments who don't have any projects to mirgate can already start usind Jira in the cloud and we then migrate the others later using Jira Cloud migration assistant?
Or will there be an issue, when the existing projects will be automatically transfered later?
Many thanks
Noel
Hi @Noel Kienzle - That's a great question you have asked. Please see my response below -
If a few teams express a desire to start using Jira Cloud, they can proceed while the remaining teams can be migrated at a later stage using JCMA (Jira Cloud Migration Assistant). However, adopting this approach may introduce additional complexity to the migration process, which would have been simpler if the entire data had been moved to a blank instance. This complexity primarily arises when transferring plugin data, which has the potential to compromise data integrity. Therefore, it is highly recommended to move all data to a fresh instance.
Considering that each instance may vary in complexity, further analysis of your Jira usage can provide more insights into the specific complexities associated with your instances.
Will be happy to connect should there be more questions.

Hi @abhishek_sharma03,
thanks a lot, that gives us a hint about the general possibility. We'll check on used plugins asyou sugegsted.
When talking about Jira instances, is it possible (and/or a valid approach) as one company to have several Jira instance (e.g. per department) but still count all user together for the pricing?
Not sure if this is even feasible within the admin area?

Hi @Noel Kienzle - You can have multiple Jira Cloud instances within the same organization under the Enterprise Plan, but it's important to note that the primary requirement for the Enterprise Plan is the purchase of a minimum 800 user license. If you have fewer than 800 users, it is recommended to use a single instance instead.
However, there have been instances where, for example, only 50 users from a total of 600 users in a particular department are using a plugin, while the cost for the plugin is being paid for all 600 users. In such cases, companies create a new instance specifically for those 50 users in order to optimize costs.
As said earlier this too is bit context dependent :)
