I changed our board name in the team managed software space kanban board and updated the space key. Whenever I add a new sprint, it still populates with the old space key.

I've removed the old space key and saved the board settings but it keeps bring the old space key back every time I login again. I want the sprint titles to use the new space key (transferring from the old "TSTNG" to the new "PTB").

I've cleared my cache, made sure the board title is accurate, and restarted Jira a few times now.

How do I clear the old space key fully? I can't seem to edit the sprint keys at all.

Hi @Mikala Forrester

If you talk about the Sprint name, you just have to rename the last one you created with the correct key then it will reuse it for new Sprints you create later.

Edit Sprint > Update the Sprint name by replacing the old key by the new one > Update

Thank you for the help. When I rename the sprint, I only have the option to rename the sprint itself, not the old board key. So I want the sprint name to show "December 2025" and I want the key to show "PTB Board."

The first screenshot shows the edit board capabilities I see,Jira Issue 1.pngJira issue 2.png and the dropdown shows how the board key still reads with the old space key.

I see, the board did not get renamed, and it seems that we are no longer able to update the board name by double clicking on the board name.

Hi @Mikala Forrester ,

In Jira, sprint names are generated from the project key, not the board name. Changing the board name (or board settings) does not affect sprint naming.

In a team-managed project, the project key itself cannot be changed after the project is created, which is why new sprints keep using the old key (TSTNG). Clearing cache or editing the board won’t change this.

Your options are:

  • Rename individual sprints manually (there’s no bulk edit)

  • Create a new team-managed project with the new key (PTB) and move issues

  • Switch to a company-managed project if you need more flexibility with keys and configuration

There’s no supported way to “clear” or update the old key for sprint names in an existing team-managed project.

If this answers your question, feel free to accept the solution so others can find it more easily.

Regards

Karim

Hello, Good day. Go to the Team managed board, make sure existing sprints has the new name that is required. Create a new sprint if that is getting created with old sprint name, then rename the sprint and create a new sprint, this should get created with new name. I confirmed it works on my instance. Thanks!
