Changing/Adding Column Names

Adam Klenk June 7, 2023

Hi we previously had a done column and we removed the done column and added "ready for release" and "release". The done column was assigned to the "ready for release" but I moved it to "release" because that is technically a shipped product. This seems to have messed up a bunch of things in our JIRA.

Roadmap - It reopened a bunch of EPICs and is displaying them. All the items under that epic are marked as ready for release, even though the entire epic has been completed for months.

Reporting - Velocity reporting is showing 0 for previous sprints.

Board - Items that are in the ready for release column seems to have been removed from the backlog, which we didn't want to happen.

Please help!! :)

In Columns and Status, the DONE column was renamed to "Ready to be released", then, a new column was added and named "Released"

Hello @Adam Klenk

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Are you working with a Team Managed project or a Company Managed project? That information displays at the bottom of the panel on the left.

Are you working with a Kanban board or a Sprint board?

Can you provide screen images of what your board's column mappings looked like before and after the change?

Team managed project.

Sprint board.

Here is a screenshot of the current view; Is there a way to look at a previous configuration?Screenshot 2023-06-07 at 2.08.20 PM.png

I think the previous setup progression was this.

Oldest to newest order

to-do, dev in progress, code review, ready for qa, qa in progress, product owner signoff, need changes, done (done column)

to-do, dev in progress, code review, ready for qa, qa in progress, product owner signoff, need changes, ready for release (done column), released

Current workflow as in above image.

to-do, dev in progress, code review, ready for qa, qa in progress, product owner signoff, need changes, ready for release, released (done column)

Thank you for that additional information.

The screen image you have provided is the Workflow. Is that where you were making your changes? Or were you making changes to the Columns of the board?

Can yo describe step by step what changes you made?

So, you did not actually delete columns?

Did the name of the Status change? Did you have a "Done" status previously?

Did you already have the Ready To Be Released and Released statuses in your workflow and mapped to columns, or were those newly created after you had already been using the project and completing work?

Can you provide a screen image showing the Columns and Statuses page for your board?

We did not delete any columns just changed the names. The ready for release column used to be the done column.

By changing your board and adding another column and status as the farthest right option, that tells Jira that anything not in that Status is now not "done". Any issues that were previously considered "done" because they were in the Ready to be Released status are now considered "not done", because you have indicated that now only items in the "Released" status are "done".

That can impact your Roadmap and past sprint Velocity reports.

Can you clarify what you mean by the "Ready for Release" issues (those in the "Ready to be Released" status) have been "removed" from the backlog? With a Scrum board a Backlog screen divides the issues into groups - one for each active and future sprint, and below that a list of the issues that are "not done" and not currently assigned to an active or future sprint. Are you saying that you have issues that are in the "Ready to be Released" status that are not appearing anywhere in the Backlog screen? And those missing issues are not Epics and are not Subtasks? And you don't have an Custom Filters active that might be hiding issues?
