Change order of issue type in create issue drop down in a company managed project

I have read that the order of the issues that show on create issue can be modified by doing this

Project Settings > Issues > Types > Actions > Edit Issue Types.  Then on this page you can add, remove, or reorder the issue types. The order that they appear in these settings should be the same as they appear on the Create Issue screen.

Doing so had no change in the order. Any thoughts as why the case may be?

Please advice.

Hello @Varsha Joshi

I just went through that in my own system, and the order of issues type in the pull-down list in the Create Issue dialog did change for me. Here is what I went through:

  1. Access a Company Managed Software project
  2. Open the Create Issue dialog.
  3. Pull down the Work Type field and note the order of the types; Bug, Epic, Story, Task
  4. Navigate to Project Settings > Work Items > Types
  5. Note list of types as displayed there in the issue type scheme; Task, Bug, Epic, Story, QC Sub-task, Sub-task
  6. Click the Actions button and select Edit Issue Type
  7. Note the order of the work item types; Bug, Epic, Story, Task, QC Sub-task, Sub-task.  Matches the order from the Create Issue pull-down, excluding sub-tasks
  8. Change the order to Epic, Task, Story, Bug, QC Sub-task, Sub-task
  9. Save the changes
  10. In a refreshed browser tab, open the Create Issue dialog.
  11. Select the project (if it was not selected)
  12. Pull down the Work Type field and note the order of the types; Epic, Task, Story, Bug. Matches the order from the Edit Issue Types screen, excluding sub-tasks

Hi @Trudy Claspill

Thanks for trying out in your setup. For some reason the same steps did not work for me. But when I copied the default field configuration and customized it that worked for me. It was nice meeting you at Team-25 :-)

Thanks

Varsha

Hi, I have the issue that no matter what I do I do always have the issue type Change Request as default when I click the Create button.

Any idea what else I could try?

1. In the Issue Type Scheme I have the default Story. I changed this to different values and saved, but no change after going to Create button. No change after clearing cookies etc. either.

2.  I moved the order of the Issue Types in the Scheme and saved it, Create button still showed default "Change Request" even when Issue Type Scheme had default in Project settings "Story".  Order of the Issue types is changed when I click the arrow to see the other issue types.

Change Request issue type is in the middle of the list and even moving it around doesn't influence its default choice after I click on Create button.

Funny thing is I created a "Change Request" last time in JIRA in project A and see the default in project B as well. Another colleague sees the Default Values in JIRA as setup in the Issue Type Schemes and she was not creating other issue type JIRA's as the default ones in the projects.

@Andrej Orszagh

The Create Issue dialog will default to showing the last issue type you created preselected by default.

The default item type you specify in the scheme applies only when you have never created an item. Or, possibly, when you have cleared your browser cache. Or, possibly, if the project you have specified does not include an item type that is the same as the last item you created.

I've not tested every scenario, but I have seen numerous discussions over the years on this topic with the net result being that the Default Type specified in the scheme is not always the preselected type in the Create dialog.

I did a search of the Atlassian public backlog and found a few issues on the topic. I'm sure there are more if the search is modified.
