Cannot use project roles on a Next-Gen Project

We have a paid account in our company, with a monthly Standard plan. When we attempt to add people to a Next-Gen project, attempting to select a project role gives an error:

Is there a workaround for this? Or is something wrong with adding people to a Next-Gen project?

you might wish to contact Atlassian Support directly for this issue. unless you did and were directed here is which case you have a starter license meaning the Community is your support forum.
