I created an issue status in:
Project -> Project settings -> Work types -> Tasks -> Edit Workflow (Top right) -> Add status - This is now where I added the status I want to delete.
How I deleted it:
I selected it in the workflow page where you drag and drop the statuses and then used the Delete status on the bottom right of the screen.
I look to delete the status under:
Jira -> Settings -> Gear icon (top right) -> Work items -> Work item attributes -> Statuses
*But I cant find it.
Note that:
1. The NEEDS REVIEW status you see is the screenshots below is a different one I intend to keep and use.
2. Also I cant find other custom statuses I am actually using under what I describe above and screenshot 2 below.
3. I can also still see the issue in the Add existing status fields after deleting it. Screenshot 1.
4. I am org admin so expect to have the rights.
5. I am on a free plan.
Could you kindly advise how I can find and delete the unwanted custom status? Thanks.

I think you are looking at two different configurations.
For company-managed projects, the settings for the workflow statuses are here -
Settings / Work Items / Work Item Attributes / Statuses
For team-managed projects, the configuration for the statuses is only inside of that specific project.
The first screenshot you shared looks like it is from a team-managed project, so if you need to delete a status, you should be able to do that directly in the workflow as it is a configuration that is specific to that project -
Also, if you are really on a free plan, it might be that you can't delete the global statuses (the ones used by the company-managed projects), which you can find here

I checked under Settings / Work Items / Work Item Attributes / Statuses but cannot see the status I created (Second screen shot I provided - just to ensure I am looking under the right place for it).
Per your description and screenshot, I did create and delete the status in a specific team project using that button (as an Org admin if that makes a difference). However I still see the status available when I search under "Search for a status" (when attempting to add one).
Let me know if you have any other ideas.

If the status isn't a global status and you deleted it from the team-managed flow, it should be gone. You are saying it's not?
