I have our backlog filter set to ORDER BY status DESC, Rank ASC, however, Jira does not allow me to re-order issues in our backlog even if they are in the same status. I get an error that "The board’s filter query isn’t sorted by rank. To rank issues manually on your board and backlog, sort issues by ascending rank." Is there any way to achieve what I'm after?
Really, I just want our current Sprint to be filtered by status and the rest of my backlog to be filtered by Rank. I wish there was an easy way to do this.
Hi @Helene Dryden ~ expanding on what John said...if you're using Kanban, I would
1. update your filter to only sort by Rank so that you can still allow manual reordering
2. configure your Kanban swimlanes by Status (use the Queries option and create swimlanes based on each of your Status values)
To achieve something close to what you want in the Backlog view, you may want to create Quick Filters for the Status values. It won't sort, but it will filter per status allowing you to see Rank by Status.
Not exactly what you want but it might provide you an acceptable solution.
Thanks for the reply! We use Sprints and Quick Filters is not a bad suggestion but still doesn't really give me what I want, you know?

Hi Helene,
The quick answer is yes. However, it probably won't provide the results you are looking for. Including that when you order by anything other than Rank you lose the ability to move cards up and down in the Backlog or on the board.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, the sorting options seem fairly limited. :/

if you're open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, you may want to have a look at the app that my team and I are working on: JXL for Jira.
JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting, and filtering by all your issue fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets. It also comes with a long list of advanced features, including support for issue grouping by any issue field(s) and ranking via drag and drop.
With these, you can build a view like e.g. this in just a couple of clicks:
This is really just one of a virtually endless number of possible views and reports; you can also view and group by any other issue fields, configure different sum-up styles, etc. etc.
I should also add that JXL can do much more than the above: From support for configurable issue hierarchies, to conditional formatting, or inline bulk editing via copy/paste.
Any questions just let me know,
Best,
Hannes
