Can we directly edit the resolution field on closed issue via the issue screen in jira cloud

Yes, you can but make sure the Resolution field should be present on the work item edit screen.
BTW its not the best practice to allow users to edit the resolutions on closed items, but this field should be present on the resolve/close transition screen where users can select the correct resolution and then they can resolve.
If there is no resolution field on the work item edit screen then another way is you can add new transition (any status to itself) and add PF to update/set the resolution and transits that ticket and resolution will set.
