Can't edit a custom field value in list view but can in issue view

I have added a custom paragraph field.  I am able to edit this value when creating or editing an issue in the issue view.  However, when I view the issues in the list view, I can't edit this custom field in the list view, inline, like the other fields.  What do I need to check?
