Hello @Nancy Michaels
Welcome to the Atlassian community.
The first thing we need to know is the type of the project with which you are working. Get that information from the Type column on the View All Projects page under the Projects menu.
It is not possible to add Statuses through the column configuration screen for all types of projects in all cases. In order to go farther down the debugging path, though, we need to know the project type.
It is a company managed project. It is setup as a Software Simplified Workflow. I am able to Add/Delete statuses for other company managed projects that look the same. I am an Org Admin.

Can you provide a screen image of what you see?
Are you listed explicitly as a project admin or board admin?

What is the filter for the board? If the filter is not explicitly calling out a single project that would prevent you from adding statuses.
Can you provide a screen image of the upper portion of the Columns screen specifically to show the information under the Workflow heading?

The filter for this board is project = XAJ ORDER BY Rank ASC

Thank you for the additional screen image and information.
Note that your project is not actually using the simplified workflow. It is using the Jira Workflow, and you can't modify that workflow from the board Columns screen.
If you want to change your project to use the simplified workflow you will need to click the button.

When I click Simplify Workflow, I see this. There are No options available on the drop-down.
And I get this message:
You must be a registered user to add a comment. If you've already registered, sign in. Otherwise, register and sign in.
You need to rename the specified workflow. The process of creating a new Simplified workflow is trying to create a new workflow using that exact same name, which isn't allowed.
