Can some fields in the create screen be made mandatory based on selections elsewhere on the screen?

Let's say I have a Create Item screen. On that screen, I have a checkbox and the values are "Type 1", "Type 2", "Type 3".

Is it possible to make certain fields underneath this checkbox on the screen mandatory and others optional depending on which of these three options is chosen?

Not out of the box. You would need a plugin like Behaviors to do that.
