Can a test/sample user be created to "impersonate" after I've set up a project as an Admin?

Andrea Billings March 7, 2025

I am set up as a Jira admin in our organization.  Is it possible to create a test or sample user in Jira (without needing to create a new user in our organization's active directory)? I'd like to be able to log in as or impersonate a user that is not set up as an admin so I can see their view.  I'd also like to be logged in as this user while facilitating some upcoming training, so they cannot see the admin functionality/options I typically see.

Thanks!

Hello @Andrea Billings

Have you referred to this page for information about logging in as another user?

https://support.atlassian.com/user-management/docs/log-in-as-another-user/

Are you an Organization Administrator?

Another Atlassian Cloud account would have to be created and granted access to your product. If you use integration with your AD to provision accounts and for authentication normally, then you would have to create an account manually through the Atlassian Cloud sign up options.

This account would need to use an email account that you can actually access to respond to verification messages for the account setup. And then you would have to grant that account access to your product, and log in to Atlassian Cloud using that account at least once, because you can impersonate only users that have logged in at least once.

Hi @Trudy Claspill

I wasn't able to find a solution. I do not have the "Director" heading/option on my menu when I open up Atlassian Administration.  Does this mean that our administrator has not set me up with the necessary access/rpermissions?

Thank you for following up.

Hello Andrea,

There are different types of Administrator roles for Atlassian Cloud products and Organizations. There are also two version of the administration experience.

However, you may not need to access Atlassian Administration.

Creation of a new Atlassian Cloud user account outside of your company's active directory would be done by going to https://home.atlassian.com and selecting the Create an account option.

You'll be prompted to enter an email address. This needs to be a valid email address and one for which you have access to the Inbox, as you will have to respond to verification emails.

After completing the creation and verification of the Atlassian Cloud user account in that manner, that new user can be added to your company's site/products. Depending on your level of access you may need to work with your Site Admins, User Management Admins, and/or Organization Admins to accomplish that.
