Can I create kanban-like boards but the columns are based upon other fields that are not a status?

Ryan Smith November 6, 2018

The kanban boards that come with Jira Software are restricted by status (workflow). My company currently has ticketing boards (manually managed) that have columns based upon assignee, issue types and other fields within the ticket.

I know about quick filters, but that's more about rows than columns. I do see some 3rd party plugins (some with the 'card' keyword) that advertise such functionality but I wanted to connect with the Atlassian Community first before I start testing them.

Thanks all!

This is definitely something that isn't out of the box. Jira Software boards are restricted to statuses only. If you want to break things up on the board further, I might suggest using swimlanes for that purpose - you can create swimlanes based on any queries you can create using a JQL search. There's even some default options like creating swimlanes for each assignee, as well.

Another thought is to use the quick filters that you can configure to appear at the top of the board. You could easily create one for each team member to quickly see what is assigned to that person, or easily filter by issue types, too.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately both suggestions are still limited to rows. I'm exploring 3rd party plugins now and hoping I can find one that gives me more control over columns.
