I am trying to setup a better way to track preventive maintenance schedule using Jira. Any suggestions on how to go about this?
hey @David Eubank ,
Care to elaborate a bit on your use case? I can see a couple of way to automate scheduled issues or even go in to a CMDB type of situation with due dates on assets..
also, you mention "a better way", what would be your current way then be?
We have reoccurring maintenance on our equipment that I would like to track. Think oil change for your car. I have 6 machines that need to be tracked and a reminder on when the next items are due. Our team current uses Jira for our plan of the day and it would be useful if we could add the maintenance schedule.

Allright, thanks for clearing that up.
i would think this sounds like a great use case for a CMDB (or FMDB) like Insight. You haven't specified a hosting type but it works great on Server and is being integrated on Cloud.
In that CMDB you would list your assets/machines and add a few custom attributes like
based on those attributes you can have the Insight automations create issues. You could even add a default technician/team on the asset on who you assign the issue. (or add a component/label to put it in the correct queue)
Does that make sense to you?

It does make sense but I found the demo video on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N690UupFJy4) and I didn't see anything talking about maintenance and how to use that side of the program. Can you point me in the correct direction on either a video or an article talking about maintenance.
I am not sure if we have jira on a server or cloud base.
Thank you

Well maintenance isn't a core part of it. You'll have to add that yourself by customizing it.
Insight as a CMDB is an empty box with building blocks that you can use as you want. You can build an object schema and add your own attributes and automations to it.
Therefor you'll need to add your own attributes based on what details you need to see and want to use.
So an article or video I'm afraid will most likely not exist for your specific use case.
Also the Cloud product is not yet as advanced as the server one so that will have a big impact.
You can easily identify it by the url of your environment:
https://someting.atlassian.net = cloud
Your own url then it's 99% sure it's Server or Datacenter
Another option could be to use an app to create repeating issues. I'm not a fan of those for this use case as you wont have any data to depend on (that would be the CMDB)
Do you have any experience with automating perhaps through Scriptrunner or are you fairly new to Jira as an admin?

Very new as of this morning, so about 5 hours now. It appears we are cloud base.

Jikes, this might be a bigger challenge than.
Do you have any experience/knowledge in general about Jira and how to administer it?
If not I'm afraid the concepts I'd have to explain might take us very far in this conversation.
I would suggest first going to the Atlassian University (https://www.atlassian.com/university) and see if you can pick up some of the core concepts.
Other than that it might be worthwhile to engage a solution partner in your area. (https://www.atlassian.com/partners), they will be able to provide you with hands on training and guidance for your specific use cases.
