Bulk of Issues from various Projects

Roberto Sánchez Serrano August 4, 2020

Good Morning,

Currently I have to close more than 15,000 issues from different projects and with different states. I would like to close all issues, even if they were from 1000 to 1000 but with the status of NOT SOLVED, is it possible?

If yes, how could it be done?

Regards

Thank you

Hi @Roberto Sánchez Serrano

You can do this - there's a few options:

  • Bulk Close (usually in sets of 1000)
  • CSV Import (Admin)
  • API Calls

I'm going to cover the first two options - API Calls I have less expansive knowledge with!

------------------

Bulk Close:

To do this, you'll need the right project permissions to transition the issues to closed - and you'll need the global permission "Make Bulk Changes" - then:

  1. Go to Issue Search
  2. Search for all the issues you wish to bulk transition to "Not Solved" - ensuring you limit the search to NOT include those in "Not Solved"
  3. Click Options (3-dots icon) in top-right and select "Bulk Change all 1,000 issues"
  4. On Step 1, select the 1000 issues you are going to change by selecting the checkbox in the title row of the list of issues. You can only change 1000 at a time but you can do this with one search as each bulk modification will lower your search by 1000 results - as you're not including those already in "Not Solved"
  5. On Step 2, select "Transition Issues"
  6. On Step 3, select the status to transition these too. There might be some fields to populate depending on your settings - eg. resolution, comments, etc
  7. On Step 4, confirm the operation and allow Jira to complete the transition
  8. Repeat x14 times

------------------

CSV Import:

To do this, you'll need the right project permissions and to be a Jira / Site Admin - then:

  1. Go to Issue Search
  2. Locate the issues you wish to transition to "Not Solved"
  3. Export them to CSV. If exporting without the API, each export can only hold 1000 issues. You might need to utilise these instructions
  4. Create a new CSV file including: Project Name, Project Key, Project Type, Issue Summary, Issue Key - and then what fields you wish to update - Status, Resolution, etc
  5. Next, go to Jira Settings > System > External System Import
  6. Choose to import from CSV
  7. Choose your file, and then follow the steps to import your file. Make sure you map the issue key from the file to Jira; this will instruct Jira to update the existing issue rather than creating a new one.

------------------

If I were you, I'd use the Bulk Close options. It is x15 separate modifications but won't take a lot of time to run through :)

In either case, test it with a small number of issues first just in case!

If you'd prefer to use the API - see the documentation for this here.
